This method, known as a \u201cfeedback law\u201d, tells his reindeer how much force to use as <em>K<\/em> times the distance left to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the current setup (blue curve in the figure below), Santa\u2019s reindeer slow down gradually, arriving gently at zero speed right above the house, which is smooth and safe but takes a little too long. The reindeer follow this method well, but the slow deceleration means Santa is barely finishing his route on time. So, Santa has a new idea: he thinks that by giving larger instructions (increasing the parameter <em>K<\/em>), the reindeer can speed up their approach, making faster stops and saving time. Since reindeer are magical and never seem to tire, Santa believes this approach should work perfectly \u2014 the bigger <em>K<\/em>, the faster the delivery!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the question: should Santa increase his commands (raising <em>K<\/em> to a larger number), or should he actually not change <em>K<\/em> at all to reach the rooftops faster?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"577\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a.jpg 577w, https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a-24x20.jpg 24w, https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a-36x30.jpg 36w, https:\/\/control-advent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-Dec-2024-a-48x40.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>a. \ud83d\ude80\ud83d\udca8\ud83d\udc9c <em>K<\/em> should be set as high as possible, like the huge value that leads to the purple curve in the figure. This will make the reindeer zoom in like they\u2019re on turbo mode. And who cares if Santa\u2019s hat flies off? As long as the reindeer can handle unlimited force, it&#8217;s the best way to handle the massive number of gifts to deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b. \ud83c\udfaf\ud83c\udf00\ud83d\udc9b The value of <em>K<\/em> should be set to a large, appropriate level, as suggested in the yellow response. However, increasing <em>K<\/em> even further won&#8217;t help the sleigh reach the destination any faster, but it will lead to oscillations around the target rooftop that will make Santa and the reindeers quite dizzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>c. \u26a1\ud83d\udd27\u2764\ufe0f Increase <em>K<\/em> compared to the current setup, but not too much. The medium value (red curve) shows the reindeer doing their best work, balancing speed and control. What could go wrong? It\u2019s not like the sleigh will suddenly do tricks, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>d. \ud83d\udc22\ud83d\udcda\ud83d\udc99 Stick with the current setup. Sure, it\u2019s a bit slow, but it\u2019s reliable. Plus, I\u2019d rather play it safe until I take that PID feedback design course and design for Santa an A+ reindeer-driving strategy next Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>e. \ud83e\udd16\u2728\ud83c\udf85 This question is beyond control theory \u2014 it\u2019s a job for artificial intelligence! Let\u2019s teach Santa\u2019s reindeer to learn on the fly.
